Ewan McGregor pondered future appearances as Obi-Wan Kenobi following his Star Wars event series.
For the first time in 17 years, Ewan McGregor is set to reprise his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in a highly-anticipated Star Wars event series on Disney Plus. Although George Lucas’ Prequel Trilogy received a very mixed reception from critics and fans when each film was originally released, many agreed that the actor’s portrayal of the young Jedi originally played by Alec Guinness in 1977’s A New Hope was a standout.
The new Obi-Wan Kenobi series, which was repurposed from a planned Star Wars Story film will follow the Ewan McGregor’s former Jedi Master between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. This six-part event series looks to be a great opportunity for the actor, with some fans seeing this as a chance for him to showcase his talents for the better, given that, for all his accomplishments, George Lucas is often considered a lackluster director of actors and actresses.
With his return for Obi-Wan Kenobi, some are wondering if the experience will lead Ewan McGregor to reprise his role in future Star Wars films and shows. In an upcoming issue from Total Film Magazine, the actor discussed bridging the gap between the Prequels and the Original Trilogy, and the possibilities of coming back after the event series concludes:
“If we were to get an opportunity to do it again, I’d be totally up for that. Here I go again. It’s like me knocking at Disney’s door again!”
Ewan McGregor seems to prefer working on this Obi-Wan Kenobi series to his experience on the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy, citing the new writing team and advances in technology:
“It was nice to come back and to bridge that gap between me and Alec Guinness. I got as much, or more, out of playing him this time than I did in the first three movies put together. That’s to do with the writing, and the people we were making the series with, and the technology, and how different everything is.”
Here is the synopsis for Obi-Wan Kenobi:
During the reign of the Galactic Empire, former Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi embarks on a crucial mission. Kenobi must confront allies turned enemies and face the wrath of the Empire.
Directed by Deborah Chow from Joby Harold’s scripts, the series stars Ewan McGregor, Hayden Christensen, Moses Ingram, Joel Edgerton, Bonnie Piesse, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang, Simone Kessell, and Benny Safdie.
