‘Thor: Love And Thunder’ Changed Gorr’s Look To Avoid Voldemort Comparison

Thor director Taika Waititi explains!

Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi explained they changed Gorr’s look in the film to avoid comparisons to Voldemort.

Gorr the God Butcher was created by Jason Aaron for his Thor run in 2013 and is now the latest villain to enter the MCU. When the first looks at Gorr in the Thor sequel finally started to surface thanks to promotional artwork, fans were quick to notice that his look in Thor: Love and Thunder didn’t exactly match up with his appearance in the comics.

Gorr actor Christian Bale recently joked that he’s glad his version got a new look so he didn’t have to run around in a G-string. While Marvel Studios is known for staying pretty true to the comics, they also aren’t afraid to tweak a character’s design if it’s necessary, and Gorr in Thor: Love and Thunder is another example of that. Thor director Taika Waititi explained to IGN why they decided to change Gorr’s look for the film:

“His face in the comics, unfortunately, does kind of resemble Voldemort. So I was like ‘people are just automatically going to make that connection.’ So we decided to depart from that design and sort of keep elements of the tone, and the fact that he had the sword. Really, it was his story that was the most important thing for us.”

Will Gorr Top Thanos?

Leading up to the release of Thor: Love and Thunder, Taika Waititi has been hyping up Gorr in the film. Thanos might be considered the best MCU villain to date, but Gorr could give him a run for this money. According to the Thor director, Gorr tested higher than any other villain during Thor: Love and Thunder test screenings. The new appearance for the villain doesn’t seem to have impacted the film’s quality either, with many already praising Christian Bale’s Gorr in early reactions.

Directed by Taika Waititi and produced by Kevin Feige and Brad Winderbaum, Thor: Love and Thunder stars Chris Hemsworth, Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, Taika Waititi, Russell Crowe, Natalie Portman, Jaimie Alexander, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper.

Thor: Love and Thunder hits theaters on July 8, 2022. Stay tuned for all the latest news on Gorr in the upcoming Thor film, and subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
