Longtime Harry Potter screenplay writer Steve Kloves has spoken out on JK Rowling’s transphobic views.

Harry Potter writer JK Rowling recently landed herself in hot water by posting a series of Tweets that many interpreted as being transphobic. Later on, the writer published an essay, defending her views but has done little for her public image. Since posting the original Tweets, Harry Potter stars Daniel Radcliffe, Katie Leung, Emma Watson, and Fantastic Beasts star Eddie Redmayne have all come out publically against her viewpoints. Now longtime Harry Potter screenplay writer Steve Kloves has spoken out against JK Rowling’s viewpoints.

Steve Cloves is best known for his work on the Harry Potter films. Since the first film was released in 2001, the man has been a screenplay writer in all of the Harry Potter films with the notable exception of Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix and the first two Fantastic Beasts films where JK Rowling received a sole writer credit on. He is, however, returning to the franchisee to help write the upcoming  Fantastic Beasts sequel.

While speaking to Variety, Steve Cloves very clearly seemed to disagree with JK Rowling’s views and felt that it was important to make everyone, including trans people, feel safe and accepted for who they are:

“Our diversity is our strength,. In these challenging times, it’s more important than ever that transgender women and men, and people who are non-binary, feel safe and accepted for who they are. It seems very little to ask.”

What do you all make of Steve Cloves’ comments? Are you surprised that the Harry Potter screenplay writer has spoken out against JK Rowling’s viewpoints? Let us know what you think in the comments below!

Here is the official synopsis for the most recent entry in the film franchise, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald:

At the end of the first film, the powerful dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald was captured by MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America), with the help of Newt Scamander. But, making good on his threat, Grindelwald escaped custody and has set about gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise wizards and witches up to rule over all non-magical beings.

In an effort to thwart Grindelwald’s plans, Albus Dumbledore enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world.

Directed by David Yates from a script written by J. K. Rowling, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald stars Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Zoë Kravitz, Callum Turner, Claudia Kim, William Nadylam, Kevin Guthrie, Jude Law, and Johnny Depp.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is now available on Digital HD, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-Ray, and DVD.
