Was Hawkeye season 2 never meant to be? The latest rumor batch gives fans some shocking insight as to why Jeremy Renner’s return was low-balled.

One of the most interesting pieces of news to come out in recent months revolved around Hawkeye season 2, a sentence that may seem odd to anyone who didn’t care to watch the series. The particular report that caught the eyes of many fans was the revelation by Jeremy Renner himself that he was offered half of his salary for the freshman outing to return for a second season.

The internet has been awash with speculation about why this may have happened. Some pointed to the general decline in interest for Marvel content on Disney Plus, others the shift to shooting tentpole projects in places like London. A rumor even came out that Hawkeye season 2 is still happening, but now with a greater focus on Hailee Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop following Jeremy Renner’s refusal to return as Clint Barton.

Was Hawkeye Ever Going To Get A Season 2?

Yet it seems the truth may be even more simple. Two reports from the rumor mill, one from Jeff Sneider and the other from Puck‘s Matt Belloni, suggest that the offer was so low because Hawkeye was never meant to return for season 2. Rather, the studio wanted to obfuscate the real factors behind the project’s cancellation and pin it all on Jeremy Renner refusing to return for less pay.

“Nobody tell Renner the show attracted middling viewership and costs would have come down across the board for a Season 2,” Belloni explained. “That is, if execs weren’t lowballing him in the first place so they could pin the cancellation on him, not them.”

Of course, it’s not shocking that a studio’s primary focus is on making money. What’s disappointing is that, if this rumor is true, the entire situation seemed set up to make sure Hawkeye season 2 could never happen. Of course, this likely won’t be the last fans see of the iconic bowman, with Jeremy Renner likely to return for at least the next two Avengers films. But from there? The character’s future may (literally) be up to where the wind blows.
