It looks like HBO is trimming their candidates for their Green Lantern series! A new report reveals Josh Brolin and Matthew McConaughey are out of the running to play Hal Jordan in Lanterns.
One of the most exciting pieces of DC Universe news over the past few weeks was the shortlist for who would be playing Hal Jordan in the HBO series Lanterns. The speculation originally stemmed from a (later confirmed) rumor that Josh Brolin had been sent an offer to play the iconic Green Lantern, later followed up by rumors that Timothy Olyphant, Chris Pine, Ewan McGregor, and Matthew McConaughey were also up for the role.
This speculation has been turned on its head with a new report by The Hollywood Reporter which revealed that Josh Brolin has rejected the offer to play Hal Jordan in the DC Universe. In addition, the article claims that Matthew McConaughey is not up for the leading role in Lanterns, contradicting prior reports from scooper Jeff Sneider that he was one of the leading candidates in HBO’s eyes to play the Green Lantern.
Who Is The Real Top Choice To Play Hal Jordan?
Following this reveal that Josh Brolin and Matthew McConaughey were out of the running for Lanterns, the internet began to rally behind Chris Pine as their top choice to play Hal Jordan. However, it’s not likely HBO will manage to convince the actor to re-join the DC Universe as Green Lantern following his stint as Steve Trevor. Pine has been very open about having no desire to return to the superhero genre, all but kicking him out of the running.
While Jeff Sneider was wrong about Matthew McConaughey being next up after Josh Brolin, the insider has revealed that Ewan McGregor is the actor to keep an eye on. This is because the actor is already in HBO’s good graces thanks to his upcoming series Flowervale Street, making him one of the easiest to access candidates for Lanterns. Though, regardless of who gets the role, it’ll certainly be an interesting time to be a Green Lantern fan in the DC Universe.
