Could Jai Courtney come back to the DC Universe? The Captain Boomerang actor reveals if he’d reunite with James Gunn in the franchise’s upcoming reboot.
Even though the original Suicide Squad movie wasn’t the best, even with the low standards of the old DC Universe, fans loved Jai Courtney’s take on the beloved Captain Boomerang. Fans were ecstatic when it was revealed he would be one of the three members to return in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad…only for him to be unceremoniously killed off within the opening minutes of the film.
Yet with James Gunn now helming a reboot of the entire DC Universe, and bringing back some members of The Suicide Squad to boot, fans have wondered if Jai Courtney could return in some form. When asked by ComicBook.com if he’d be open to playing a new villain in the franchise, Courtney admitted he hadn’t given it much thought, but he would love to return as Captain Boomerang, even if he isn’t sure if that could happen.
“At this point, no. I mean, I’ve always kind of been candid about that. Boomerang was so much fun to play. I would love to see him come back in some capacity. It’s impossible to imagine, right now, that that’s on the DC hit list. But who knows?”
Jai Courtney Wants A Captain Boomerang Origin Film
Even though Jai Courtney doesn’t think it’s likely that James Gunn would ring him up to return as Captain Boomerang in the new DC Universe, that doesn’t mean he’s out of ideas for the iconic Aussie. Continuing on, the actor admits that he always wanted an origin story for the character outside of the Suicide Squad films. However, he’d take the call no matter what it was for.
“I mean, I’ve always had a dream of finding a way to do an origin story with him,” Courtney explained. “I know he’s not like the most beloved character from that canon, but he was so much fun to play and I just think doing something in that space with such irreverence, and just that jovial sort of sensibility would just be a hoot. I’m open to it if the opportunity ever came and the phone rang and they wanted me to resurrect that part.”
James Gunn does definitely have a penchant for giving obscure characters their time in the sun. So even if Captain Boomerang isn’t the most popular character outside of the Suicide Squad franchise, there’s still enough fans that it could make an interesting side-story in the DC Universe. Though given how busy the studio is currently, Jai Courtney may be waiting a while on that call!
