James Gunn Confirms Casting Of Key Daily Planet Character For New ‘Superman’ Movie

The Daily Planet expands!

The Daily Planet family just keeps getting bigger! James Gunn has confirmed a key casting announcement for his Superman reboot.

Despite the volley of casting announcements put out right before last year’s Hollywood strikes, James Gunn has been rather tight-lipped about who he’s cast in Superman, with only a few key characters slipping their way through the cracks like Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.

Just recently, Hollywood trades reported that Wendell Pierce, best known for his roles in The Wire and Suits, would be playing the Daily Planet’s editor-in-chief Perry White in the upcoming reboot. To celebrate, Gunn took to Threads to welcome the actor to the DC Studios family.

While Perry White is one of the most iconic characters from The Daily Planet whose last name isn’t “Lane” or “Olsen,” it came as a shock to many fans that Wendell Pierce would be playing the character in James Gunn’s reboot. The cast is already packed, with most of the movie’s characters being superheroes, leaving fans to question just how big the roster for Superman could really get.

‘Superman’ May Have More Daily Planet Characters To Cast

It seems Wendell Pierce’s Perry White won’t even be the last character from the Daily Planet to join Superman. Comedian Chris Distefano recently revealed he auditioned to play a reporter for the DC Universe reboot. While it wasn’t confirmed which reporter he would’ve played in the film, signs point to him having been up for the role of Steve Lombard, the sports reporter for the outlet.

Both Steve Lombard and Perry White have always been minor antagonists for Clark Kent, suggesting that Superman may hold a B-Plot focusing on the characters working at the Daily Planet while dealing with the world-ending consequences of the main story.

Regardless of how big of a role Perry White has in this film, it’s likely James Gunn has plans for Wendell Pierce going into the future of the DC Universe. Gunn has been consistent in wanting to keep his actors across all forms of media, so cementing such an iconic Daily Planet character so early on is an important step in seeing that vision through.

Superman is currently scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the DC Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
