Work on The Batman sequel is well underway. Jeffrey Wright recently revealed his hopes for Jim Gordon’s role in the upcoming DC film.
Jeffrey Wright was one of the biggest fan-favorite characters in The Batman, with his role as Jim Gordon truly feeling like the glue that tied the project together. With Matt Reeves currently tinkering away at a script for the sequel, the Academy Award-nominated actor revealed that he hopes to explore more of Jim Gordon’s private life in his next DC role.
“Well, it’s probably not a good idea to get too far ahead of Matt [Reeves],” Wright explained in a recent interview with DiscussingFilm. “One of the things that I’ve spoken about with him a little bit is, in playing the role, I wondered about his private life and I wonder about people who have the level of responsibility that he has, having that public face of rectitude and goodness.”
“I wonder what lies underneath Commissioner Gordon because the Batman wears his cowl but, in some ways, Gordon wears a mask too. Gordon represents justice in a way through his type of righteousness, not sanctimony, and I wonder what might lie behind that mask with the sacrifices that he may have to consider because he gives so much to this public persona and his civic duty.”
“What’s the bearing of all that on him, underneath his mask?” Wright continued. “Those are questions that might be interesting to pursue, but we’ll see. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to read and dive back into it, but I know as much as you know about it at the moment. We’ll get there!”
While there’s not much to be known about The Batman sequel, it would certainly be a shock to not see Jeffrey Wright’s role as Jim Gordon expanded. Matt Reeves’ more grounded take on the hero is one of the few chances fans have had to truly explore his relationship with the GCPD commissioner. Besides, the chemistry between Wright and Robert Pattinson alone is reason enough to include the expansion!

The first movie ended with Batman apprehending the Riddler, who has flooded Gotham City, though details about Part II are currently scarce. Matt Reeves is co-writing the script of the sequel with Mattson Tomlin.
The heads of DC Studios recently revealed that The Batman: Part II is set to hit theaters on October 2025. The first movie earned $770.8 million at the worldwide box office, a figure that makes it the seventh highest-grossing movie of 2022.
