The official reason why Harry Potter‘s controversial creator, JK Rowling, didn’t appear in the serious 20th Anniversary Special has been revealed.
Back in 2020, Harry Potter JK Rowling became one of the world’s most controversial writers with her views on transgender people. Specifically, it started with a Tweet that many viewed as transphobic and she faced a huge amount of backlash for it. In response, JK Rowling has doubled down on these views and many of those involved in the films have since condemned the writer.
The views of the writer have cast a cloud over the entire Harry Potter franchise and put JK Rowling’s involvement with the various adaptations it into question. While Warner Bros still regularly talks to the writer about potential spinoff projects, she was notably absent from the Harry Potter 20th Anniversary Reunion. Some openly speculated that this was because of Rowling’s views but her team has offered up another explanation.
According to Entertainment Weekly, an invitation to JK Rowling for the Harry Potter 20th Anniversary Reunion was extended. Her team, however, determined that archival interview footage of Rowling from 2019 was sufficient for the special. Furthermore, sources state that the decision was not influenced by the writer’s views on transgender people or the controversy surrounding it.
The next installment in the franchise, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is being directed by David Yates from a screenplay written by JK Rowling and Steve Kloves. The film stars Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Callum Turner, William Nadylam, Poppy Corby-Tuech, Jessica Williams, Jude Law, and Mads Mikkelsen.
