Is Aaron Pierre the perfect Green Lantern? The actor speaks on how it feels to bring John Stewart to the DC Universe with the Lanterns series.
Fans very rarely hit home runs when it comes to fancasting. However, Lanterns is one of the very few shows where the internet’s pick for the character may have truly been the best pick. When it was announced that Aaron Pierre would be joining the DC Universe as John Stewart, all eyes immediately turned to the Green Lantern series with renewed vigor. This wasn’t hurt by Pierre recently coming off Rebel Ridge, which was one of the few Netflix original projects to truly grip the zeitgeist in a while.
Aaron Pierre also appears to love playing John Stewart just as much as fans love him. When speaking at the American Black Film Festival Honors, the Lanterns star revealed his excitement to join the DC Universe in the new series. While he didn’t reveal much about the project, he did express that he intends to do everything he can to bring justice to the beloved Green Lantern on the small screen.
“Right now, I’m locked in and focused on a very beautiful project. A project that’s very dear to my heart. It’s Lanterns and I’ll be portraying the beautiful character of John Stewart who I love very dearly. I’m going to do all in my power to bring him to life in a way that resonates with the people and celebrates that character.”
John Stewart’s Role In The DC Universe
Many fans believe that Lanterns is only the start of Aaron Pierre’s role in the brand new DC Universe. The series is set to combine the cosmic world of the Green Lantern corps with the grounded mysteries inherent to small town America. This makes John Stewart the perfect envoy between Earth and space as the franchise continues on, especially as rumors of a Justice League film heat up.
Lanterns itself will also reportedly have some wider implications for the DC Universe. The obvious connection is Guy Gardner, the Green Lantern set to appear in Superman, who is also heavily rumored to appear in the upcoming series alongside Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler. Another rumor suggests that Hal Jordan and John Stewart may start to uncover the seeds of the franchise’s first “big bad,” taking a very different direction than Thanos or Darkseid.
The Green Lantern series Lanterns is currently in production for HBO. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the DC Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
