Is the Justice League already on its way? James Gunn recently spoke about the DC Universe’s most famous superhero team in his upcoming reboot.
One of the most exciting pieces of lore that James Gunn dropped when he first announced that the DC Universe was getting a (mostly) full reboot was the revelation that superheroes would have already existed long before the franchise’s fresh start. This opened up so many possibilities when it came to stories set in the universe, especially when it came to legacy characters.
However, this left many to wonder what exactly was going on with the Justice League in the new universe. With Superman being the film to kick off the reboot and Batman having his own project in development, fans were left scratching their head wondering if the lack of Justice League staples in the initial slate of announcements meant James Gunn was taking a different approach with the team in the DC Universe.
Does The Justice League Exist In The DC Universe?
James Gunn was quick to clear up all of this confusion during the recent promotional tour for Creature Commandos. When asked if shows like Peacemaker and The Suicide Squad are canon to the DC Universe in spite of the reboot, Gunn explained that they are mostly considered canon. However, certain elements like the Justice League haven’t been established quite yet.
“Yeah, they’re light canon,” Gunn explained in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “Peacemaker is pretty straightforward, with the exception of the appearance by a certain group [the former DCEU’s Justice League] at the end. (Laughs.) They don’t exist yet. But the rule is: If we mention [something from the past] in one of the new DCU shows [and movies], then it happened. So that’s the way we’re dealing with it.”
Given how many heroes are set to be active in the new DC Universe by the time Superman releases, it’s a shock that any iteration of the Justice League hasn’t been present in the canon. While perhaps a bit controversial, it does give James Gunn and his fellow writers plenty of room to explore the concept once the universe officially starts to cross over with itself.
Superman is currently scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the DC Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
