The cast of Lanterns just keeps growing! Garret Dillahunt has joined the upcoming Green Lantern series in the role of a mysterious villain.
The past few weeks have been quite the treat for Green Lantern fans. The upcoming HBO series Lanterns has been slowly growing its cast. Starting with the casting of Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, the show has quickly added fan-favorite Aaron Pierre to its ranks as John Stewart and Kelly Macdonald as Chandler’s love interest. Now that roster has grown even bigger, with Army of the Dead alum Garret Dillahunt signing on as a villain.
The official report of Garret Dillahunt being cast in Lanterns came from Deadline, with the outlet confirming the actor had landed a major recurring role as a villain in the upcoming series. The character, who currently goes by the name of William Macon, is described as “a self-righteous, conspiracy-minded man who masks his ruthless ambition behind a charming and calculated facade.” Macon was also called a “modern day cowboy,” potentially suggesting some ties to Kelly Macondald’s sheriff in the show.
What Green Lantern Villain Is Garret Dillahunt Playing In Lanterns?
Similar to other characters in Lanterns, there’s no character named William Macon in the comics that can be pointed to as a direct inspiration for Garret Dillahunt’s role. However, that doesn’t mean decades of Green Lantern comics can’t provide a hint to who his villain could be. Given his first name is William, many speculate that that Dillahunt could have been secretly cast as William Hand, a villain who would later take a major role in the Blackest Night saga as the Black Hand.
However, given William Macon is described as a conspiracy theorist, there’s also the possibility that Garret Dillahunt serves as a foil for the Manhunters story. In the Green Lantern comics, the Manhunters were the original peacekeeping corp created by the Guardians of the Universe. They eventually played a key role in a storyline similar to Secret Invasion where civilians were sleeper agents for the organization. Given Lanterns is set to be heavily inspired by detective stories, such a character like Macon would be the perfect foil for the titular heroes, especially if he turns out to be a Manhunter all along.
