Marvel’s Avengers developer Crystal Dynamics has teased a previously unrevealed mechanic from the upcoming superhero video game.
Crystal Dynamics showed off plenty of new details regarding Marvel’s Avengers last week during its WAR TABLE streaming event. The developer revealed not only the game’s main villain as MODOK, but also a look at the game’s co-op War Zones, which lets players team up and take on missions together as Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
Following the streaming event, War Zones director Phillipe Therien took to Reddit for an AMA in which he responded to a fan’s question regarding a special bar seen underneath the characters’ health bars, that seemed to deplete when performing a special power.
“It’s called their intrinsic ability, as you mentioned it fuels their special abilities and every hero has a different one,” Therein wrote. “They can be offensive or defensive in nature. More details on those soon!”
In addition to the reveal of MODOK, and a look at the War Zones, fans were also treated to a deep dive into the game’s combat, and character customization for each individual superhero.
The developers behind Marvel’s Avengers are intending to meet the games’ current September release date despite the Coronavirus pandemic. While the game is set to release on current-gen consoles later this summer, players who purchase the game on Playstation 4 will be able to upgrade to the next-gen version on Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X for free.

Marvel’s Avengers begins at A-Day, where Captain America, Iron Man, the Hulk, Black Widow, and Thor are unveiling a hi-tech Avengers Headquarters in San Francisco — including the reveal of their own helicarrier powered by an experimental energy source. The celebration turns deadly when a catastrophic accident results in massive devastation. Blamed for the tragedy, the Avengers disband. Five years later, with all Super Heroes outlawed and the world in peril, the only hope is to reassemble Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
Featuring regular content updates, Marvel’s Avengers will take players on an epic journey delivered over multiple years. This game is what’s next for the Avengers.
Marvel’s Avengers will be released on September 4, 2020, for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. The release date for the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions will be announced at a later date.
