Matt Reeves is teasing The Batman sequel and the upcoming HBO Max series focusing On The Penguin.

While doing the press rounds for the fifteenth anniversary of Cloverfield, Matt Reeves sat down with Collider and offered fans an update on the status of The Batman sequel. While he wouldn’t reveal if The Batman 2 begins production this year, Reeves said that he is currently hard at work on the film’s script alongside his writing partner Mattson Tomlin.

“We’re deep in it and my partner and I are writing, Mattson [Tomlin] and I are writing, and it’s really exciting,” Reeves told Collider. “I’m really excited about what we’re doing… I’m really excited to be doing that with [Robert Pattinson], because I just think he’s such a special person and actor.”

During the interview, Matt Reeves also commented on the Batman spin-off series The Penguin, which sees Colin Farrell reprising his role as Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot. The series is set to begin production in a few weeks in New York City, with the shoot expected to last until this Summer.

“We are very, very soon going to start shooting The Penguin with Colin. That is super exciting… There are some other things we have planned too,” Reeves continued. “The BatVerse of what we’re doing has me very, very excited, and I’m very passionate about it… There’s actually a whole little fabric of things we’re wanting to do, the way we’re doing with Penguin and how that comes back into how that will lead into the sequel, and what that sequel is going to be.”

The future of the Batman series

The Batman opened in theaters in March 2022, introducing audiences to a new take on the titular DC Comics hero played by Robert Pattinson. It earned $770.8 million at the worldwide box office, a figure that makes it the seventh highest-grossing movie of 2022.

Robert Pattinson’s Batman has yet yet to meet other DC Comics heroes and is expected to remain a standalone franchise. James Gunn and Peter Safran are currently working on creating an interconnected DC Universe consisting of film, television, animation and video game projects.

The Batman also stars Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson, Jayme Lawson as Bella Reál, with Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Colin Farrell as the Penguin and Barry Keoghan as The Joker. The movie is streaming exclusively on HBO Max and is available to own on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD.
