Filming for Mortal Kombat 2 is finally ramping up! A new behind-the-scenes photo from the sequel teases the return of the iconic Hanzo Hasashi, a.k.a. Scorpion!
Mortal Kombat 2 is already set to be a sequel that improves upon its predecessor, with faces new and old joining together to build up another brutal death game. A new BTS photo by producer Todd Garner reveals one of the most popular characters yet to be mentioned in any promotional materials, teasing Scorpion’s return with his iconic kunai rope dart.
Nobody truly expected a Mortal Kombat 2 without Scorpion. The character is the face of the franchise, even more so than the ACTUAL face Liu Kang. While Hanzo Hasashi did die in the last film, he did return to burn Bi-Han to ash before the credits rolled. This BTS photo is simply a confirmation of what everyone knew: the sequel is getting toasty!
The history of the Mortal Kombat series
The original Mortal Kombat movie, released in 1995, was a surprise hit and went on to become a cult classic. The 2021 reboot was similarly successful, grossing over $83 million worldwide despite being released during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Mortal Kombat franchise has been a mainstay of the video game industry since the release of the first game in 1992. The series has spawned multiple sequels, spin-offs and adaptations over the years, with each new entry introducing new characters, gameplay mechanics and storylines.
Fans of the Mortal Kombat series can look forward to the return of director Simon McQuoid for the upcoming sequel. Jeremy Slater, who wrote the 2019 Netflix series The Umbrella Academy and is also working on the new DC Universe with James Gunn, has been tapped to write the screenplay.
