‘Mortal Kombat 2’ Casts Martyn Ford As Shao Kahn; Adds Quan Chi & Sindel

The Emperor of Outworld Arrives!

Martyn Ford F9 Shao Kahn

Casting for Mortal Kombat 2 is getting TOASTY! Martyn Ford has been officially cast as Shao Kahn, along with casting being revealed for Quan Chi, Sindel and King Jerrod.

While the first Mortal Kombat film wasn’t the most well received, it did make enough to warrant a sequel. Casting news has finally begun to release about the film, with F9: The Fast Saga actor Martyn Ford being cast as Emperor Shao Kahn. The film will also feature Desmond Chiam as King Jerrod, Ana Thu Nguyen as Sindel, and Damon Herriman for Quan Chi.

For fans, this means that the film is almost certainly going to follow the events of the Mortal Kombat 2 game, focusing on the tournament between Earthrealm and Outworld, ruled by the ruthless Shao Kahn. The film does seem to be taking some liberties, however, seeming to retcon the controversial character Quan Chi into the events of the game similar to the Mortal Kombat reboot and bringing back the dead King Jerrod, who served as Sindel’s husband and King of Edenia before being killed by Shao Kahn’s forces.

The history of the Mortal Kombat series

The original Mortal Kombat movie, released in 1995, was a surprise hit and went on to become a cult classic. The 2021 reboot was similarly successful, grossing over $83 million worldwide despite being released during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Mortal Kombat franchise has been a mainstay of the video game industry since the release of the first game in 1992. The series has spawned multiple sequels, spin-offs and adaptations over the years, with each new entry introducing new characters, gameplay mechanics and storylines.

Fans of the Mortal Kombat series can look forward to the return of director Simon McQuoid for the upcoming sequel. Jeremy Slater, who wrote the 2019 Netflix series The Umbrella Academy and is also working on the new DC Universe with James Gunn, has been tapped to write the screenplay.

The Mortal Kombat sequel is currently in pre-production and is expected to begin filming later this year. A release date has not yet been announced.
