Filming for Mortal Kombat 2 seems to be starting back up! Johnny Cage actor Karl Urban has taken to Instagram to share a behind-the-scenes photo from the upcoming sequel.
Following the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike, Hollywood is fast-tracking quite a few of its blockbuster projects. Mortal Kombat seems to be no exception, with its sequel gearing up to film as production cranks back up. Karl Urban, who plays Johnny Cage, took to Instagram to share a photo of the film’s cast gathered on set.
Joining Karl Urban as Johnny Cage in the BTS photo is Supergirl alum Mechad Brooks as Jax Briggs, Damon Herriman as Quan Chi, Ana Thu Nguyen as Queen Sindel, Desmond Chiam as King Jerrod, and Martyn Ford as Shao Kahn. Most of the cast from the first Mortal Kombat film, such as Lewis Tan as Cole Young and Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, are also expected to return for the sequel.
The history of the Mortal Kombat series
The original Mortal Kombat movie, released in 1995, was a surprise hit and went on to become a cult classic. The 2021 reboot was similarly successful, grossing over $83 million worldwide despite being released during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Mortal Kombat franchise has been a mainstay of the video game industry since the release of the first game in 1992. The series has spawned multiple sequels, spin-offs and adaptations over the years, with each new entry introducing new characters, gameplay mechanics and storylines.
Fans of the Mortal Kombat series can look forward to the return of director Simon McQuoid for the upcoming sequel. Jeremy Slater, who wrote the 2019 Netflix series The Umbrella Academy and is also working on the new DC Universe with James Gunn, has been tapped to write the screenplay.
