Game of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau revealed he nearly donated to the fan petition for HBO to change the controversial finale.

After the Game of Thrones finale aired, many fans were extremely disappointed with the way the series bowed out and a dedicated minority started a petition for HBO to remake the last episode with a different conclusion.  In a new interview with Variety, Jaime Lannister star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau revealed he thought it was hilarious and even considered donating to it himself. He explained that he sympathized with the Game of Thrones fans who were disappointed with how it wrapped up. Coster-Waldau’s co-star Nathalie Emmanuel recently spoke out about working on the set, and even recounted how Emilia Clarke stepped in to defend her. But on the topic of the finale, Nikolaj Coster Waldau recognized that it would be hard to please everyone, since most fans had their own specific ideas about how Game of Thrones should have ended.

“I didn’t follow it at all. [Pauses.] Obviously, I heard about it. I was aware of the petition for a new ending, which I thought was hilarious. I almost wanted to donate to that petition. HBO saying, ‘You’re right, so many people want it, we’re going to do it.’ I think everyone had their own opinion. I find the world of fandom really interesting. Everyone wanted something specific and different from what they got. It’s a combination of — you imagine an ending; but also, I think if you’re a hardcore fan, it was really upsetting that it ended. You lived with this for eight seasons. There is still a massive community dedicated to ‘Game of Thrones.’ I think there was a real fear that was going to go away. It had to end.”

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau also opened up about his character’s death when asked about the ending to Jaime and Cersei Lannister’s story. He seemed to hesitate before stating “it was great. It was fine.” which doesn’t sound too enthusiastic, but he also pointed out that it’s also too recent to discuss it in depth. Hopefully fans will enjoy the upcoming prequel series more than the final few seasons. House of the Dragon will arrive on HBO in 2022 and recently began casting. Take a look at Coster-Waldau talking about Jaime’s death below.

“Oh, how did it end? He was — no, it was fine. It was great. It was fine. How do you end that story? Let’s talk about this in 10 years, then you can talk about it. But now, I think it’s a little too recent.”
