HBO has released the first footage from their upcoming television adaptation of the critically acclaimed video game series The Last of Us, featuring The Mandalorian‘s Pedro Pascal.
Alongside the debut of House of the Dragon, HBO released a teaser for many of their upcoming new series, The Last of Us included. The games featured a smuggler called Joel, Pascal’s character in the series, tasked with transporting a young girl named Ellie across a post-apocalyptic United States.
Fans of the game have been waiting a long time for a glimpse of the HBO adaptation, so the reveal of Pedro Pascal’s Joel and Bella Ramsey’s Ellie has been joyfully received.
‘You Have No Idea What Loss Is’
While the footage from The Last of Us in the new HBO teaser is brief, it is enough to whet some appetites and get audiences excited for the Pedro Pascal series.
The footage can be seen towards the end of the teaser below:
As well as revealing Pedro Pascal’s Joel and Bella Ramsey’s Ellie, this early footage from HBO’s live-action rendition of The Last of Us offers a first look at fellow survivor Bill, played by Parks and Recreation star Nick Offerman. The teaser also confirms the series will arrive next year.
There is no sign yet of any of the game’s hordes of infected, but with clips showing Pascal’s Joel teaching Ramsey’s Ellie how to use weapons – and an intense chase scene moment – it’s clear the zombified enemies are not far away.
For fans of the game, or The Mandalorian fans who are eager to see more of Pedro Pascal as a rough-around-the-edges antihero tasked with transporting a child who’s not as defenseless as they look through a dangerous world, The Last of Us looks set to deliver in a big way.
The original video game centers on the relationship between a smuggler named Joel and 14-year-old Ellie, the latter of whom may be the key to curing the deadly pandemic that resulted in the post-apocalypse world of the game. Hired to smuggle Ellie out of a quarantine zone, Joel finds himself relying on the teenage girl just as much as she relies on him as they fight to survive on their journey across the United States. The HBO adaptation will cover the events of the first game, with the second game potentially surviving as the basis for additional content. The upcoming series is said to be one of the most expensive ever made, with each episode said to cost roughly $10M with a total budget of around $200M.
HBO’s The Last Of Us will be released in 2023. Stay tuned for all the latest news surrounding the upcoming series and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
