Darkseid actor Ray Porter has teased his role for the recently-announced Zack Snyder cut of Justice League.
Fans rejoiced earlier this week when it as announced that the mythical Zack Snyder cut of Justice League would officially be hitting HBO Max in 2021. As soon as the announcement hit the internet, more information regarding the production of Justice League began to trickle out. Just yesterday, actor Ray Porter officially confirmed that he was the actor who played Darkseid in Zack Snyder’s cut of Justice League. In a recent interview with the Lightcast podcast, Porter teased his role as the villain. Porter began by discussing the scale and tone of the set, as well as his issues with the mocap suit.
“I definitely knew that I was part of something enormous, but the way Zack works, and the general attitude of everybody who’s worked with him so closely for so many years, is really really positive. It was a very kind, friendly, happy set, and great work was getting done. It felt really good, it felt really great. I will say that the lycra mocap suit didn’t feel great. Ciarán [Hinds] and I both looked odd in our lycra mocap suits [laughs].”
Ray Porter continued by discussing the Darkseid role by revealing that the gig was “a lot of work,” and that there’s no telling how much of the footage he shot will be showcased in the Zack Snyder cut of Justice League.
“Obviously you never know how much… I know what I did, and you never know how much is going to be in the film, because editing occurs. If it all comes out in the wash in 2021 and I’m not in as much as I thought I would be, or there was stuff that’s cut, that’s just part of the deal, that’s part of the process. But there was a lot of work. There was a lot of work. Obviously not as much as some other cast members, but there was a lot going on.”
Darkseid was originally teased in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Ray Porter’s role as a villain was essentially an open secret, despite never being officially announced. Porter revealed that he was surprised by some of the negative backlash he got from fans online when they discovered he’d be playing Darkseid in the Zack Snyder film.
“I’ve been sort of under the radar for a number of years, I’ve popped up on various TV shows and a couple of movies and things like that, but I know that when the first rumblings of me playing this role came out, I read some stuff online. Some of it was kind, some of it really wasn’t, about, ‘Oh, there’s no way Zack would do that. He’s not going to cast some nobody.’ My favorite quote was, ‘Zack would want a real actor.'”
Ray Porter definitely got the short end of the stick when it came to basking in the glory of Justice League as he wasn’t allowed to reveal anything about his role. The actor also discussed how he never knew that a Zack Snyder cut of the film would ever come out.
“I got messages saying, ‘Did you play Darkseid in Justice League?’ I immediately went into panic mode and I shot off an email to Warner Bros. and I shot off an email to DC like, ‘I didn’t say anything. I didn’t say anything’, They were great, they were like, ‘No, it’s okay.’ But I still wasn’t clear, and I didn’t want to do anything that was inappropriate, I didn’t want to muddy the waters. Also, at this point, there was no idea that this was gonna be a thing that was going to come out.”
It was a shock to many in 2017 when Darkseid was nowhere to be found in Justice League, one of the most anticipated films from the DC Extended Universe. When Joss Whedon replaced Zack Snyder months before the film’s winter release, numerous changes were found that displeased both fans and critics. As the years went by, fans became increasingly passionate over restoring Snyder’s intended vision for the film and, lo and behold, we’re just a year away from it happening, with Darkseid in tow.
Here’s the official synopsis for Zack Snyder’s Justice League:
