Could Robert Downey Jr. finally come back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe? The actor recently spoke on his thoughts about a potential return as Iron Man.
It’s hard to imagine that it’s been over five years since Robert Downey Jr. last put on the suit as Iron Man in the MCU. Despite this, his time as the character still stands tall as one of the most influential and meaningful in modern pop culture. The death of his Avengers hero is seen as almost a sacred moment, with many fans afraid for anyone to touch it.
However, with the MCU quickly barreling toward the end of its next saga, fans have been wondering if Robert Downey Jr. would put on the armor one final time. After all, Hugh Jackman recently made his return to the Marvel universe in Deadpool and Wolverine, so it wouldn’t be shocking for Downey Jr. to return as Iron Man in what may be the biggest Avengers movie of all time.
Robert Downey Jr. Speaks On Potential Return
Robert Downey Jr. addressed the possibility of making a return to the MCU in a recent Variety interview. While speaking to Jodie Foster, the actor admitted that the character of Iron Man is ingrained in his DNA, so he’s surprisingly open to returning as the Avengers hero.
It’s just crazily in my DNA. Probably the most like-me character I’ve ever played, even though he’s way cooler than I am,” the actor explained. “I’ve become surprisingly open-minded to the idea. Between Nyad and [Night Country] and, for me, Oppenheimer and then Sympathizer, it really is crazy because we look pretty good. I was actually looking at the stills we were taking, making sure: ‘Do we still look kind of OK?’ I’m like, ‘We look pretty good.”
Given the recent rumors that Marvel wants Roberty Downey Jr. to return for Avengers: Secret Wars, it’s good to hear that the actor is open to making his return as Iron Man. His return to the MCU would certainly need to be a massive event. However, given the respect all parties have for the character, the possibility is more likely than ever.
