Sam Raimi touches on the possibility of directing Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man 4.
More than a decade before he joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe to direct Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Sam Raimi was developing Spider-Man 4, which would’ve seen the return of Tobey Maguire in the titular role in what could’ve been some much-needed redemption after the third film’s release in 2007, which was widely seen as a disappointment from critics and audiences alike. Unfortunately, that film was ultimately scrapped, with Sony rebooting the entire franchise with director Marc Webb and Andrew Garfield now filling in the suit.
After The Amazing Spider-Man films underperformed, Sony and Marvel Studios opted to collaborate for another reboot, in which director Jon Watts and actor Tom Holland went on to make three films. The third, No Way Home went on to further explore the Multiverse, bringing back both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as their respective versions of the webhead.
Thanks to the concept of the Multiverse seen in No Way Home and to be further explored in the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, director Sam Raimi has been asked about whether or not he could possibly return to direct his long-shelved Spider-Man 4 with Tobey Maguire donning the suit yet again. In an interview with MoviePilot, the director explained why he believes it’s possible:
“I didn’t think [my directing Spider-Man again] was possible but after jumping back in with the multiverse, I realized that anything is possible now. So, I’m completely open to it.”
Calls for Sam Raimi to return to direct Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man 4 aren’t the only wishes amongst fans these days. After the success of No Way Home, many have clamored for Andrew Garfield to have his cancelled third standalone film resurrected, and perhaps serving as the official webhead for Sony’s Universe that includes Venom, Morbius, Kraven the Hunter, Madame Web, and El Muerto.
