Spider-Man: No Way Home director Jon Watts has parted ways with the MCU Fantastic Four reboot.
On Disney Investor Day 2020, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige officially confirmed that the Fantastic Four were getting rebooted into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) canon. In that announcement, he confirmed that Jon Watts (Spider-Man: No Way Home) would be at the helm of the project, marking this as what would’ve been his fourth consecutive collaboration with the franchise.
Unfortunately, fresh off of the record-breaking success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Jon Watts is officially parting ways with the MCU Fantastic Four reboot. According to reports, this exit from the upcoming film was an amicable split between the filmmaker and Marvel Studios. Kevin Feige released the following statement regarding the matter:
“Collaborating with Jon on the Spider-Man films has been a true pleasure. We were looking forward to continuing our work with him to bring the Fantastic Four into the MCU but understand and are supportive of his reasons for stepping away. We are optimistic that we will have the opportunity to work together again at some point down the road.”
Unlike the typical “creative differences” we hear in regards to directors leaving projects within the MCU such as Patty Jenkins from Thor: The Dark World, Edgar Wright from Ant-Man, and Scott Derrickson from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it appears that this departure was on good terms. After all, Jon Watts is still celebrating the success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which is often cited for inspiring optimism within the movie theater industry in bringing audiences back in droves after a rough two years. In the meantime, it will be interesting to see who will step in to take over the Fantastic Four reboot.
Here is the synopsis for the 2015 film:

Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy.
Directed by Josh Trank, 2015’s Fantastic Four stars Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara, Jamie Bell, Toby Kebbell, Reg E. Cathey, and Tim Blake Nelson.
