Is Thunderbolts just more of the same? Sebastian Stan speaks on how the upcoming team up breaks the mold of the MCU.
When Thunderbolts was first announced, fans were quick to dismiss it as Marvel’s way to cash in on the popularity of the Suicide Squad franchise. However, as more details about the project came out, it became more than just another excuse to see Sebastian Stan sweaty and shirtless. It quickly became one of the most anticipated upcoming projects in the MCU, even if people can’t quite articulate why.
Sebastian Stan himself has a few theories as to why Thunderbolts is set to be so different than what came before it in the MCU. When speaking on the project, he revealed that it’s hard to compare it to any other Marvel project due to the eclectic cast of characters in the film. He heaps praise onto his fellow actors like David Harbour and Wyatt Russell, saying that their chemistry together is part of what makes the film so special.
“I don’t feel you can compare it to any previous Marvel movie,” Stan explained in a recent chat with Deadline. “and that’s because of the group of characters in this film and these actors. I couldn’t have had a better time than I did with David Harbour, Florence Pugh, Wyatt Russell, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.”
“I mean, every single one of these people are funny, they’re generous, and so I think a lot of that chemistry did make it into the movie, and I’m excited for people to see that. It’s a little bit like The Breakfast Club.”
Thunderbolts Brings Practical Effects To The MCU
Yet anyone who has tried to make elephant toothpaste knows the final project isn’t about the chemistry, it’s about the motion. And according to Sebastian Stan, Thunderbolts has that motion in spades. The actor reveals that Marvel wanted the film to have a lot of practical effects, unlike many of the MCU’s most recent projects that rely heavily on VFX.
It has its own vibe,” Stan continued on. “And it’s funny, and it’s real, and we did actual real stunts, like when you’re watching a truck blow up, it’s a truck blown up. It’s not CGI. Marvel really wanted this to have its own – there were many things in the movie that were actually done practically, and I think that does go a long way, because people are just smart. I think audiences just, they know.”
Given how grounded many of its lead characters are, it’s a relief that Marvel didn’t lean too heavily into the CGI for Thunderbolts. Sebastian Stan has been one of the MCU’s longest running actors, with him reaching his 14th year as the character Bucky Barnes. If anyone knows what separates a good from the bad with the franchise, it’s him. So it seems fans may be in for quite a treat when Thunderbolts finally lands on the silver screen.
Thunderbolts is currently set to hit theaters on May 2, 2025. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe!
