Cut Simu Liu some slack! The Shang-Chi star assures fans that a sequel is coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Destin Daniel Cretton back at the helm.
Shang-Chi dropped to rave reviews back in 2021, being one of the MCU’s biggest hits at a time when the superhero genre was experiencing a downturn. Yet three years later, there’s still no news on a sequel. This has led to the film’s star, Simu Liu, having to assure fans every few months that he and director Destin Daniel Cretton will be reuniting once more, even if he doesn’t know when.
“I will say this. It’s definitely happening, I should probably lead with that,” Liu explained during a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. “People, whether it’s online or in person, ask me every single day and tell me every single day how much they enjoyed the first movie and how much of a moment it was. And I think there’s just so much goodwill, and I’m so deeply appreciative of that.”
“So please know that if you’ve ever sent me a message, if you’ve ever asked about a sequel or just approached or any which way, I really take it to heart, and I really, really appreciate it. I think I speak for myself and Destin [Daniel Cretton], our returning director, when I say that we’re so beyond excited to jump back in.”
It’s good to hear that Simu Liu is still in good spirits about the many, many times he’s been asked for an update on the Shang-Chi sequel. It’s equally good to hear that Destin Daniel Cretton is still attached to the project, given his work on the MCU series Wonder Man and the upcoming Naruto film. Let’s just hope Marvel kicks things into high gear in getting the movie made!
Where Will Shang-Chi Appear Next
Simu Liu has previously revealed that his Shang-Chi sequel will likely take place after Avengers 5. However, with Destin Daniel Cretton leaving as the director of the crossover movie, it’s possible the project gets moved up once he’s free. Though Liu’s knowledge of the next Avengers film may suggest he’ll also appear in the film once it enters production.
Simu Liu has also teased his presence outside of Destin Daniel Cretton’s bubble. Last year, the actor teased he’ll be very busy in the rest of the MCU, possibly hinting at Shang-Chi appearing in future MCU projects. Even outside of the Avengers franchise, Shang-Chi may appear in the upcoming Captain America sequel, or even Blade! However, that’s all speculation until those projects make their debut.
