Is Shang-Chi 2 dead in the water?

Will Shang-Chi ever get a sequel? Simu Liu has taken a cheeky jab at Marvel Studios as the highly-anticipated film continues to spin its wheels.

Marvel Studios took a lot of swings in the multiverse saga, introducing plenty of heroes not expected to return in solo projects anytime soon. However, one shocking inclusion in this roster is Shang-Chi, who’s introductory outing served to be a diamond in an otherwise rough era to the MCU. Though despite the film’s star Simu Liu repeatedly confirming a sequel is in development, no official word has been given on the movie’s progress.

Simu Liu decided to get cheeky about this stagnation in a recent social media interaction. A fan recently commented deriding Marvel Studios for not having already made a sequel to Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings, stating that they did the actor dirty by not doing so. This comment was liked by Liu in what seems to be a playful knock against the studio for not making more headway on the long-awaited film.

Is Shang-Chi Getting A Sequel?

Despite the lack of any updates from Marvel Studios, it’s clear that some sort of sequel to Shang-Chi is in the works, if only due to Simu Liu’s insistence on the fact. However, there is a good reason that the project has stagnated. Destin Daniel Cretton, who served as director and co-writer for the film, has had quite a full slate over the past few years. He singlehandedly helmed the upcoming Wonder Man limited series, and was originally tapped to direct Avengers 5 prior to the project transforming into Avengers: Doomsday with Joe and Anthony Russo.

Marvel Studios has now closed a deal with Destin Daniel Cretton to serve as the director for Spider-Man 4. Given that project starts filming sometime next year after Avengers: Doomsday, things aren’t looking great for fans hoping for a Shang-Chi sequel anytime soon. However, Simu Liu has also kept busy within the MCU, with the character set to have a starring role in Marvel Zombies and likely appearing in the aforementioned culmination of the multiverse saga.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is currently streaming on Disney Plus. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
