Wonder Man gets the spotlight!

Wonder Man is officially under a new banner! The Disney Plus series is now a Marvel Spotlight show as the Marvel Cinematic Universe shifts focus for its TV offerings.

One of the biggest complaints about the MCU following Avengers: Endgame is that there’s just too much content. Keeping up with the franchise almost seems like a full time job, especially with how many Disney Plus shows there are. This mentality was addressed in a recent interview by Brad Winderbaum, Marvel’s head of streaming, who detailed the studios’ new approach to TV content.

“There was a lot of pressure post-‘Avengers: Endgame’ on the public to feel obligated to watch absolutely everything in order to watch anything,” Winderbaum told Variety in a recent piece. “Part of the rebranding was a signal to the general audience that we’re creating a lot of options, and you can follow your tastes within this brand.”

“Some will be more comedic, some will be more dramatic, some will be animated, some will be live-action. Marvel is more than just one thing – it is actually many different genres that just happened to coexist in a single narrative. The characters still live and breathe in the same universe, but the interconnectivity is not so rigid that you need to watch Project A to understand Project B.”

“We were already, as of two years ago, adapting our process from being, you know, fill the service as fast as possible no matter what, to a more considered approach. I really like the idea of two shows a year, especially because we are developing more than we make.”

Of course, this mentality has always been true for the MCU. Prior to Avengers: Endgame, projects like the Netflix shows and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. weren’t considered essential viewing despite being canon (at least, for a time). It was only during the franchise’s peak that Marvel fans were pushed to consume anything and everything the studio put out. So, hopefully, the fandom is able to shift back to its more sensible roots.

What Marvel Spotlight Means For Wonder Man

Along with this shift, Variety also confirmed that Wonder Man has officially received the title of a Marvel Spotlight project. This follows in the footprints of Echo, which was the first MCU series released under this banner.

The Marvel Spotlight banner means a few things for Wonder Man. For one, the show is likely to only get one season, described by Variety as a “one-off”. The show may also debut on both Disney Plus and Hulu like Echo. Though, most importantly, the project is meant to be less connected to the MCU than other offerings, potentially meaning that it will be more isolated than many expected.
