‘Superman: Legacy’ Tone Will Be ‘Quite Different’ From ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’

Why is Superman?

Superman Legacy Guardians of the Galaxy Drax

With James Gunn set to write and direct Superman: Legacy, many fans are worried that the film will follow the irreverent tone of his Guardians of the Galaxy films. However, Gunn assures fans that the two series will have very different tones.

James Gunn has been very open about his passion for Superman as a character. While many of his prior projects like the Guardians of the Galaxy films or Peacemaker focus on morally grey characters who learn to be better through their stories, Gunn emphasized that what he likes about Superman is his innate goodness, calling him a “big old galoot.” Despite this, many fans are worried that the tone of his prior work may seep into Superman: Legacy. When asked about this in a recent interview, Gunn assured fans that the film will be different from a Guardians of the Galaxy film:

“I learned so much from making these movies,” Gunn told the Rolling Stone. “But it’s not like Superman is going to have exactly the same vibe as a Guardians movie. It’s actually quite different.”

While James Gunn is definitely best known for his weird comedies, Superman: Legacy wouldn’t be his first trip beyond his comfort zone. The most notable example is 2019’s Brightburn which Gunn developed as a more horror-focused version of Superman’s origin story. Gunn also wrote Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead film and the thriller The Belko Experiment. It’s not a stretch of the imagination that a tale of hope and justice would be within Gunn’s wheelhouse.

The future of the DC Universe

James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room and a unified storyline across film, television, animation and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.

The FlashBlue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom are currently in various stages of post-production at Warner Bros. Discovery, with all four DC Universe movies slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
