Is James Gunn actually cooking with Superman? A recent test screening report reveals the film’s runtime and audience reactions to the DC Universe revival.
The test screening has become one of the defining pillars of the internet rumor mill. It allows for fans to get early insight into how a film is doing, and allows for leakers to make claims with no reasonable expectation of being proven wrong. It’s no wonder that, with the entire DC Universe hanging in the balance of Superman‘s box office performance, fans have been non-stop searching for any report they can get about James Gunn’s upcoming film.
The latest test screening report comes from The InSneider newsletter. The veteran entertainment reporter has previously dropped other reports about the Superman test screenings, claiming that reactions were “mixed” before a more recent report saying that the film was “terrible”. Now, his tune has changed on James Gunn’s latest foray into the DC Universe, as his latest source thoroughly enjoyed the upcoming film.
“I spoke to someone this weekend who has seen ‘Superman,’ and they really liked it. They said David Corenswet delivers as the Man of Steel and that the ‘jokey moments’ I mentioned on my podcast, The Hot Mic, were initially viewed out of context, but worked much better within the flow of the edit. They compared it to how Gunn balanced the humor and the drama in ‘The Suicide Squad,’ saying it has genuinely funny moments but it also knows when to drop the shtick and get serious.”
How Long Will The Superman Movie Be?
Early reactions to the test screening weren’t the only thing revealed in the report. It also seemed to reveal exactly how long James Gunn plans for fans’ introduction to the DC Universe to be. According to Jeff Sneider, Superman clocks in at 140 minutes, or roughly 2 hours and 20 minutes. This is pretty standard for modern blockbusters, and lands just around the length of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
Of course, it’s possible that this runtime is off by a few minutes as James Gunn tweaks the edit in the final weeks before release. However, this report seems to suggest that the DC Universe is off to an incredibly solid start with Superman. And with multiple projects already full-steam ahead, it’ll hopefully be able to capitalize off that momentum!
Superman is currently scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the DC Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
