The story of The Dark Knight may not be over quite yet! Writer Jonathan Nolan reveals if he’d be open to penning a sequel to the iconic film.

The Dark Knight is widely considered to be the best Batman movie of all time, if not one of the best superhero films of all time. Many consider Christopher Nolan’s trilogy to be perfection, which leads them to speculate on what a fourth movie would look like. It seems even the project’s writer Jonathan Nolan is interested in the idea, saying he’d love to come back for a sequel.

“Wouldn’t that be a dream,” Nolan explained in an interview with SHOWSHA. “That period was about 10 years of my life, from when I got the call to work on Batman Begins in 2003 to putting out The Dark Knight Rises In 2012 and it was epic.”

“The chance to work Christian [Bale], Heath [Ledger], Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine and the extraordinary cast of those films…A sort of American icon. So, if I had the chance to go back and work on that again, absolutely.”

Jonathan Nolan didn’t opt to reveal any ideas for a potential The Dark Knight sequel. However, given Leonard Dicaprio was once planned on playing the Riddler in the trilogy, it’s likely that would be the best place to start when planning the project. Though given Batman’s vast treasure trove of rogues, it’s hard to say for certain!

The Future Of Batman Films

While it may not be likely The Dark Knight trilogy gets a proper continuation anytime soon, the films still have a large impact on the character. It’s clear The Batman is heavily inspired by Christopher and Jonathan Nolan’s take on the character. Not only is the film receiving a sequel, but a spin-off for The Penguin is due out on Max later this year.

Batman: The Brave and The Bold is also set to come out for the new rebooted DC Universe. Given the film will be more inspired by the fantastical mainline continuity, it’s not likely The Dark Knight will have a large influence on the film’s style. Though given how much the trilogy has impacted the character, it may be a breath of fresh air to see a different take on the Caped Crusader.
