The Penguin may be much darker than fans first thought! Colin Farrell teased a deeply violent spin-off for The Batman universe.
Fans were shocked when it was first announced that Colin Farrel would be helming his own spin-off of The Batman. While fans loved him as The Penguin, there was a hesitancy within the fandom regarding how much juice the character actually had to carry his own series on Max.
With the first trailer for The Penguin now out, it’s safe to say all the naysayers have turned tail. The teaser showed an even grittier take on Gotham City than The Batman. In a recent interview, Colin Farrell emphasized the darkness of the spin-off, teasing something truly violent is coming to Max.
“We wrapped it, man. We did it. Stuck a fork in it, two weeks ago.” Farrell explained in a recent interview. “And it was a long and really wonderful experience. And it’s dark, that’s what I can tell you about it. It’s really dark. And really heavy, I think. It certainly was doing it. Which is not to say that I didn’t have fun while doing it, I had an amazing time. But it’s incredibly violent.”
“It’s one man’s rise to what he’s always dreamed of inhabiting, which is a certain power or social status,” He continued. “And the death of Carmine Falcone at the end of the film leaves this vacuum in Gotham to be filled. “
“And so there are various people that are grabbing for that power and this is Oswald’s journey, trying to rise to the top, through extraordinary obstacles and it’s super dark. Lauren LeFranc wrote a really twisted eight hours of television.”
Colin Farrel’s comments give a brief tease as to what lies in store for fans in The Penguin. While The Batman was the story about a man evolving into a symbol, it seems this spin-off will focus more heavily on the socio-political conflicts inherent to Gotham’s broken system. It puts the Max series in a similar realm to the Joker film, certainly enticing fans for more as the series gears to drop this fall.
How The Penguin Fits Into The Batman Universe
While details about The Penguin have been kept close to the chest, it seems as though the Max series is taking cues from traditional mobster movies. The show is set to follow the journey of Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot, attempting to take over the seedy underbelly of Gotham after the death of Carmine Falcone in The Batman.
Oswald Cobblepot isn’t the only character vying for the crown in The Penguin. Colin Farrell is joined by Clancy Brown, who makes his debut in the Batman universe as Sal Maroni, an infamous mobster from the comics who served as Carmine Falcone’s successor. He’s also the mobster that scarred Harvey Dent, transforming him into Two-Face.
The appearance of Clancy Brown as Sal Maroni in The Penguin could set up some interesting plot threads for The Batman‘s upcoming sequel. The Max series will also likely bring Colin Farrell’s version of the character closer to his comic counterpart: a well-connected villain with a finger in every pie in Gotham.
