Thor: Love and Thunder has a franchise-best opening weekend at the box office.
Marvel Studios’ newest film Thor: Love and Thunder finally made its theatrical debut over the weekend. The film, which is Chris Hemsworth’s fourth solo film as the God of Thunder, opened to $143 million at the domestic box office, and to a global total of around $302 million worldwide.
When compared to previous films, Thor: Love and Thunder is undoubtedly performing at the highest it’s ever been box office wise. Thor: Ragnarok opened to $122.7 million, while Thor: The Dark World earned $85.7 million and the 2011 origin film earned $65.7 million. It’s clear that the character’s popularity has grown significantly since his debut 11 years ago, and although the response to Taika Waititi’s latest has been mixed, MCU the brand loyalty remains strong with audiences.
Movie Theaters Are Having A Massive Summer
The big box office numbers for the new Thor are yet another indication as to why movie theaters are having the most encouraging summer blockbuster season they could possibly desire. Kicking off with Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness clearly helped, and other blockbusters such as Jurassic World Dominion and Minions: The Rise of Gru have also helped. And of course, the summer’s reigning box office champion Top Gun: Maverick is perhaps the strongest indication of the industry truly booming again after a rough two years with the pandemic.
Here is the synopsis for the film:
The film finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.
Directed by Taika Waititi and produced by Kevin Feige and Brad Winderbaum, the Thor solo film stars Chris Hemsworth, Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, Jaimie Alexander, Taika Waititi, Russell Crowe, Natalie Portman, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper.
