‘Spider-Man’ Writers Had Post-‘No Way Home’ Ideas For Tobey Maguire & Andrew Garfield

What if...?

Tobey Maguire Andrew Garfield Spider-Man 4 No Way Home

Spider-Man: No Way Home writers Erik Sommers and Chris McKenna had some ideas for Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield after the film’s events.

Based on the trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it looks like the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home caused some significant ripple effects in the MCU. No Way Home notably reset Tom Holland’s Spidey, with the world forgetting about his secret identity. During IGN Fan Fest 2022, Chris McKenna shared that he and co-writer Erik Sommers also had some ideas for what would’ve happened to Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield:

“Believe me, we talked about it and we actually had ideas for, you know, ways of showing the effects if there were any. I mean, believe me, these are all great questions.”

Erik Sommers went on to say that they almost explored the idea of showing how Doctor Strange’s spell would’ve impacted Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s worlds in a post-credits scene:

“Chris and I even were tempted to maybe, you know, pitch a tag where you got to see something. ‘What would happen if this guy goes back and this has changed? Wouldn’t that be fun?’ Again, we didn’t want to distract from the emotion of what was going on with our Peter Parker.”

Here is the synopsis for Spider-Man: No Way Home:

For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero’s identity is revealed, bringing his Super Hero responsibilities into conflict with his normal life and putting those he cares about most at risk. When he enlists Doctor Strange’s help to restore his secret, the spell tears a hole in their world, releasing the most powerful villains who’ve ever fought a Spider-Man in any universe. Now, Peter will have to overcome his greatest challenge yet, which will not only forever alter his own future but the future of the Multiverse.

Directed by Jon Watts from a script written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, No Way Home stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Tony Revolori, Martin Starr, J.B. Smoove, Marisa Tomei, Jon Favreau, Benedict Wong, Benedict Cumberbatch, Willem Dafoe, Alfred Molina, and Jamie Foxx, with Andrew Garfield, Tobey Maguire, and Tom Hardy.
