Was Venom ever met to crossover with the MCU? Tom Hardy gives more information on why the merging of the universes was simply never meant to be.

There’s been a lot of talk in recent months about why Tom Hardy’s Venom never officially appeared in the MCU. This was all sparked by some initial comments by Hardy that suggested a film was in the works, but was ultimately scrapped. However, the actor would later go on to clarify that there was never any official plans, simply “talks” of the two franchises having a crossover.

Yet it seems as though the actor isn’t done speaking on the crossover that never was. Speaking to Esquire, Tom Hardy explained that he would have loved for his version of Venom to make a leap over to the MCU proper. However, due to a number of corporate factors outside of his control, the two universes were kept separate.

“I loved playing Eddie in Venom,” Hardy explained. “Juggling chainsaws…Put me on a unicycle and throw everything at me! I was just really trying to push myself as much as I could. But I had no Spider-Man! No Avengers! It’s just us. Until those bridges are crossed…That’s way beyond my control. And I’d love to do that, but that’s not even a conversation to have at my level, of just being an actor in that world.”

“That’s the game. We played in the Sony counterpoint to Disney’s Marvel panoply, of which [Marvel Studios president] Kevin Feige has a huge amount of cards, and Sony has a huge amount of cards in its own right, including Spider-Man, and then there’s just no crossover. We’d love to cross over! That’s not happened. That’s what happens, and it’s one of those things.”

Is Tom Hardy’s Venom In The MCU?

It’s always sad when corporate contracts keep characters like Venom outside of the franchise’s where they belong. And while it seems as though Tom Hardy’s time as the character concluded without an official crossover with the MCU, that may not be entirely true. After all, there is still at least two years left in Marvel’s multiverse saga to make this dream a reality.

Sony already needs to work out a deal with Marvel to have Spider-Man appear in Avengers: Doomsday. While they’re at it, it would only make sense for the studio to push for Tom Hardy’s Venom to appear in the MCU’s biggest crossover, if only because his franchise is the only one of their films to have actually turned out successful.
