Sony chairman Tom Rothman confirmed that there are three different “tranches” of Spider-Man movies at the studio.
Following the record breaking success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Sony is certainly staying in the business of making films based on the Friendly Neighborhood webhead. What makes the whole endeavor even more interesting is the fact that the films won’t just be standalone outings for Tom Holland, but rather films within three different “tranches” as Sony chairman Tom Rothman described.
In a recent interview with Deadline, Sony’s Tom Rothman discussed how the studio’s Marvel business is broken into three tranches, specifying Tom Holland’s standalone films, the animated Spider-Verse movies, and also the films in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe such as Venom and Morbius:
“Uncharted, Jumanji, Spider-Man. We have our Marvel business, which breaks into three tranches. There are the Spider-Man movies, and we’re currently at work on two Spider-Verse sequels to our Oscar winning animated movie, with Lord and Miller. We hope to get working on the next Spider-Man movie.”
Three different tranches of Spider-Man movies will help keep Sony afloat.
At this moment of time, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is the most popular franchise in the world. And with that being the case, the most popular character in that franchise is without a doubt, Spider-Man. Even with his presence in the MCU, Sony looks to continue expanding the brand of the webhead through its spinoff films centered on numerous characters, including the upcoming Kraven the Hunter and Madame Web. Also, let’s not forget about the acclaimed animated film Into the Spider-Verse bringing more popularity to the character of Miles Morales. The film, which won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, has spawned two sequels in Across the Spider-Verse and Beyond the Spider-Verse.
Here is the synopsis for the latest film in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, Morbius:
