The upcoming film, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts will be the start of a new trilogy according to Paramount.

The Transformers series is one that had something of a rough time in live-action. The three of the first four Michale Bay-directed films were despised by fans and critics alike but were massive hits worldwide. With this box-office clout, Paramount was all set to start its own cinematic universe based around the Transformers with Michael Bay in charge of it all. Then the fifth film, Transformers: The Last Knight, underperformed at the box office, forcing the studio to reconsider all of its plans.

Despite The Last Knight‘s underperformance, Paramount still had one more Transformers film in the middle of production. That film, Bumblebee turned out to be a big hit with audiences and critics and became the new starting point for the franchise. It was eventually revealed that Paramount had two new Transformers films in development with one said to be a direct sequel to Bumblebee and another said to be a more widespread reboot of the franchise based around the Beast Wars series. From the look of things, however, Paramount decided to mesh the two ideas together.

The film, eventually revealed to be titled Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is a direct sequel to Bumblebee and is using elements from Beast Wars for its story. Ron Pearlman is set to voice Optimus Primal though it is not clear how much inspiration it will take from the series of the same name. Earlier today, Paramount revealed that the upcoming film would be the start of a new trilogy. It is currently unclear when these additional films will be released.

Here is the synopsis for the most recent Transformers film, Bumblebee:

On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.
