Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 was a juggernaut at the worldwide box office, webbing up more than $890 million. Despite the financial success, the film still has its critics and that includes legendary comic book artist and entrepreneur Todd MacFarlane, who co-created one of the film’s main antagonists, Venom, alongside writer David Michelinie back in 1988.
Speaking to Collider, MacFarlane recently revealed his biggest issue with the depiction of Venom in Raimi’s film. Essentially, MacFarlane designed the character as a hulking brute who Spider-Man could never beat in a physical one-on-one match. The idea was to challenge Spidey’s tenacity and creativity rather than his super-strength. MacFarlane believes that Raimi’s decision to keep Venom relative Spidey-sized took away much of that threat.
Venom recently crossed the $850 million mark at the worldwide box office. The film has out-grossed superhero films such as Justice League and Wonder Woman and has also made more than Sony’s two Amazing Spider-Man films and is nearing the worldwide box office totals of 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Starring Tom Hardy, Venom follows Eddie Brock as he attempts to revive his journalism career by investigating the Life Foundation only to come into with an alien symbiote that bonds with him, granting him powers and transforming him into the titular anti-hero.
Directed by Ruben Fleischer from a script written by Jeff Pinkner & Scott Rosenberg and Kelly Marcel, Venom stars Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze, Reid Scott, Jenny Slate, Ron Cephas Jones, and Woody Harrelson.
VENOM tells the evolution story of Marvel’s most enigmatic, complex and badass character Venom! Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) is a broken man after he loses everything including his job and fiancee. Just when his life is at its lowest, he becomes host to an alien symbiote which results in extraordinary superpowers – transforming him into Venom. Will these powers be enough for this new lethal protector to defeat great evil forces, especially against the far stronger and more weaponized symbiote rival, Riot?
Venom is now available on Digital and will be released on 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack, Blu-ray Combo Pack, and DVD on December 18.
