Hawkeye star Vincent D’Onofrio has opened up about his MCU return as Kingpin.
Spoilers ahead for Hawkeye.
The penultimate episode of Hawkeye saw Vincent D’Onofrio return as Kingpin. The character first debuted in Netflix’s Daredevil series, which was canceled in a bid to streamline all Marvel Cinematic Universe shows to air on Disney Plus. Now that Kingpin is back and has been folded into the MCU, the possibilities are absolutely endless for the iconic character.
The final episode of the season saw Kingpin taking on Kate Bishop. Though Kingpin knocked the wind out of the heroine, she managed to detonate a series of explosives that left him weak. But this is Kingpin… so he naturally escaped. In doing so, he ran into Maya Lopez’s Echo. It was revealed earlier in the season that Vincent D’Onofrio’s nefarious villain had allowed Lopez’s father to perish at the hands of the Ronin. As revenge, Maya shoots Kingpin in the fact, a scene directly lifted from the comics.
In a chat with Deadline, Vincent D’Onofrio discussed the shocking Hawkeye finale and how he hopes to play the character once again.
“I hope he didn’t die. I’m with the fans, I want to keep playing this part. My hope is that we continue.”
The star continued by discussing how important of a character Kingpin is and how he plays the MCU character.
“The people I play are based on real emotions and real life, and I try to bring the events of their pasts in the now. Kingpin is like that in Hawkeye. He has a lot more physical strength and can take physical abuse, but grounded in this emotional world. And he does everything through that emotional world: He’s like a child and a monster simultaneously.”
The season finale ended with Hawkeye reuniting with his family. A minor plot point throughout the season is how a Rolex watch was left behind in the Avengers compound and that Kingpin and the Tracksuit mafia have their hands on it. The finale concluded with Hawkeye giving the Rolex back to his wife. At the back of the watch, the SHIELD insignia and the number 19 are etched. When asked if he knows anything about the finale, Vincent D’Onofrio revealed that he was clueless about the MCU plot thread.
“I’m trying to figure it out like everyone else. I’m in the same boat: I really need more information.”
Here is the synopsis for Hawkeye:

Hawkeye stars Jeremy Renner, Hailee Steinfeld, Tony Dalton, Fra Free, Brian d’Arcy James, Aleks Paunovic, Piotr Adamczyk, Linda Cardellini, Simon Callow, Vera Farmiga, and Alaqua Cox. Florence Pugh also returned in her Black Widow role.
