The Hunger Games franchise has added another prominent star!

Peacemaker Viola Davis Suicide Squad Amanda Waller

Amanda Waller actress Viola Davis is the latest big name to join The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes cast.

Lionsgate continues to cast the ensemble for their continuation of The Hunger Games franchise, The Balland of Songbirds and Snakes. On Monday, it was announced that The Suicide Squad star Viola Davis would also appear in the upcoming film.

Who Is Viola Davis Playing?

Viola Davis is set to play another antagonistic role as Volumnia Gaul, the Head Gamemaker of the 10th annual Hunger Games, which features Rachel Zegler’s Lucy Gray Baird. After The Hollywood Reporter broke the story, Lionsgate confirmed the news with director Francis Lawrence saying the following about adding Davis to the cast:

“Dr. Gaul is as cruel as she is creative and as fearsome as she is formidable. Snow’s savvy as a political operator develops in no small part due to his experiences with her as the games’ most commanding figure.”

The Hunger Games producer Nina Jacobson also shared her excitement for bringing Davis into the franchise:

“From the beginning, Viola has been our dream for Dr. Gaul because of the finely layered intelligence and emotion she brings to every role. A brilliant and eccentric strategist, Gaul is instrumental in shaping a young Coriolanus Snow into the man he will become. We are incredibly fortunate to have an actor with Viola’s extraordinary range and presence to play this pivotal role.”

Here is the premise for The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes:

Years before he would become the tyrannical President of Panem, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow is the last hope for his fading lineage, a once-proud family that has fallen from grace in a post-war Capitol. With the 10th annual Hunger Games fast approaching, the young Snow is alarmed when he is assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird, the girl tribute from impoverished District 12. But, after Lucy Gray commands all of Panem’s attention by defiantly singing during the reaping ceremony, Snow thinks he might be able to turn the odds in their favor. Uniting their instincts for showmanship and newfound political savvy, Snow and Lucy’s race against time to survive will ultimately reveal who is a songbird, and who is a snake.

Directed by Francis Lawrence from a script written by Michael Lesslie, Michael Arndt, and author Suzanne Collins, the upcoming film stars Tom Blythe as Coriolanus Snow, Rachel Zegler as Lucy Gray Baird, Jerome Lance as Marcus, Ashley Liao as Clemensia Dovecote, Knox Gibson as Bobbin, Mackenzie Lansing as Coral, and Aamer Husain as Felix Ravinstill, Josh Andrés Rivera as Sejanus Plinth, and Hunter Schafer as Tigris Snow, Jason Schwartzman as Lucretius “Lucky” Flickerman, Peter Dinklage as Casca Highbottom, and Viola Davis as Volumnia Gaul.
