X-Men ’97 is set to see the return of the beloved X-Men: The Animated Series universe to televisions around the globe. Recently it was confirmed by one of the writers that one of the X-Men’s greatest villains in Mister Sinister is also set to return for the project.
Much of the cast from the original show will be reprising their role in the revival, including Cathal J. Dodd as Wolverine and George Buza as Beast. While it’s long been known that Christopher Britton would reprise the role of Mister Sinister in the show, it was unclear what role he would play. During the recent X-Men: 60 Uncanny Years Live Virtual Event, the show’s head writer Beau DeMayo confirms that Sinister will take a leading role in the show as the main villain:
“A very, very, very, very favourite character of mine and many others, Mister Sinister, will rear his ugly head from the past with a pretty foolproof plan to destroy the X-Men once and for all.”
This isn’t the first time Minister Sinister was planned to take center stage in an X-Men Adaptation. Just last year it was confirmed by Jon Hamm that he was in talks to play the villain in The New Mutants before the negotiations fell through. It was also confirmed that the Essex Corporation teaser at the end of X-men: Apocalypse was meant to set up for the cancelled Gambit spin-off film. It’s unclear if his appearance in X-Men ’97 is only meant to be for the show, or if it could signal a greater involvement in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the X-Men become further integrated into that world.
To Me, My X-Men!
Beau DeMayo, best known for his work on The Witcher and Moon Knight, is serving as head writer and executive producer of the new X-Men ’97, with original series writers Eric and Julia Lewald consulting alongside director Larry Houston. The final episode of the original series saw the X-Men standing outside the X-Mansion as they said goodbye to Charles Xavier, who left with Lilandra to visit the Shi’Ar homeworld.
X-Men ’97 is set to feature the return of voice actors Cal Dodd, Lenore Zann, George Buza, Adrian Hough, Christopher Britton, Catherine Disher, Chris Potter, Alison Sealy-Smith, and Alyson Court. The Disney Plus series also features the voice talents of Jennifer Hale, Anniwaa Buachie, Ray Chase, Matthew Waterson, JP Karliak, Holly Chou, Jeff Bennett, and AJ LoCascio.
