Hold on to your light cycles! Evan Peters, best known for his role as Quicksilver in the Fox X-Men films and Ralph Bohner in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has joined the long-awaited Tron 3.
A sequel to Tron: Legacy has been in the works ever since the film hit theaters in 2010. Many actors and scripts have been cycled through for the project, with one of the few consistent players being Jared Leto as the sentient computer program Ares. Evan Peters is set to star as the lead in the film opposite Leto.
There’s no word on what type of character Evan Peters will be playing in Tron 3, though the script calls for someone who’s a soldier in the computer world and a gamer in the real world. Peters’ time as Quicksilver in the X-Men would certainly help the former, whereas his role as Ralph Bohner makes him the perfect fit for the latter. Tron 3 currently has no set production or release date.
The history of the Tron franchise
The Tron franchise started with a 1982 film directed by Steven Lisberger and starring Jeff Bridges, with the actor playing Kevin Flynn, a programmer who is transported inside the software world of a mainframe computer. In 2010, Disney released Tron: Legacy, as sequel that saw Bridges reprising his role as Flynn opposite Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde. Legacy earned just over $400 million at the worldwide box office against an estimated production budget of $170 million.
Jared Leto has been trying to get Tron: Ares off the ground for quite some time now. The 51-year-old actor signed on to Ares after his turn as The Joker in 2016’s Suicide Squad but the movie has been stuck in development hell for years now. Joseph Kosinski (Legacy) and Garth Davis (Lion) were previously expected to direct Ares before moving on to other projects.
According to Deadline, Jared Leto is producing Tron: Ares alongside Justin Springer, Jeffrey Silver and his Paradox partner Emma Ludbrook. Sean Bailey and Sam Dickerman are serving as executive producers. The movie does not yet have a release date.
