Andrew Garfield discussed the fate of the ending Rhino battle in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
Back in 2014, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hit theaters and received a mixed reception from critics and fans alike. Andrew Garfield, who portrayed the titular webhead, was last seen suited up as the iconic superhero as he faced off against The Rhino (Paul Giamatti) in the film’s concluding action set piece. The film left the fate of the duel ambiguous, and for at least seven years, fans had no idea what happened after the fight.
Because of the underperformance of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker was retired and Tom Holland took over for the newly-rebooted version of the character set in the canon of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sony ended up abandoning their planned shared universe set in The Amazing Spider-Man films that would’ve included a Sinister Six film that may have featured The Rhino. Several years later, Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire would have the opportunity to return to their roles in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
In a recent appearance on On Air With Ryan Seacrest, Andrew Garfield addressed the cliffhanger ending of the 2014 film, teasing what may have happened between Peter Parker and The Rhino:
“If I remember correctly, what happened after that, was not suitable…because it was so brutal. I have no idea. That’s where the script ended, and that’s where our movie ended. So you get to choose your own adventure with that one. What would you have liked to have seen happen?”
During the big climactic battle of Spider-Man: No Way Home, we get a glimpse at what appears to be The Rhino in the sky as Doctor Strange attempted to keep the fabric of reality alive following the dangerous spell he conducted to help Peter Parker (Tom Holland). Whether or not we see Rhino again in the future remains unknown, but it would be fun to see him face off against Andrew Garfield again in the future several years after the events of The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
Andrew Garfield reprised his role in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Here is the synopsis:
For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero’s identity is revealed, bringing his Super Hero responsibilities into conflict with his normal life and putting those he cares about most at risk. When he enlists Doctor Strange’s help to restore his secret, the spell tears a hole in their world, releasing the most powerful villains who’ve ever fought a Spider-Man in any universe. Now, Peter will have to overcome his greatest challenge yet, which will not only forever alter his own future but the future of the Multiverse.
Directed by Jon Watts from a script written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, No Way Home stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jacob Batalon, Jon Favreau, Jamie Foxx, Willem Dafoe, Alfred Molina, Benedict Wong, Tony Revolori, Marisa Tomei, Andrew Garfield, and Tobey Maguire.
Spider-Man: No Way Home is now playing in theaters. Meanwhile, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is available to own on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD.
