Harley Quinn Season 3 could not make any jokes targeting Marvel.

The HBO Max original animated series Harley Quinn is set to return for Season 3 later this month. The series, which is made for an adult audience, has been acclaimed for its irreverent humor and how it explores the DC Universe in such a hilarious lens. Much of the show’s humor is also borderline self-aware, right down to this new season including Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy and DC’s The Suicide Squad director James Gunn as a fictionalized version of himself.

Given the comedy on display in Harley Quinn, some would assume that there would potentially be some jokes made at the expense of Marvel Comics. Well, executive producers Justin Halpern and Paul Schumacker were recently involved in an Instagram live AMA in which they discussed the upcoming Season 3, and acknowledged that some jokes made at the rival comic book company’s expense were remove:

“We even had some Marvel jokes in there, which we ended up not being able to include in the show… I think we ended up just like saying, ‘Eh, it kind of breaks the world of the show.’ But we had a joke… [with] Thanos and then Clayface was like, ‘Who’s Thanos?’ But it just felt like it was maybe breaking the world of the show. But who knows, maybe we’ll get some bonus content out there at some point.”

Why you should be watching Harley Quinn

With Season 3 on the horizon, there couldn’t have been a better time to start catching up on Harley Quinn then now. In particular, if you are a fan of DC Comics, this show will certainly tickle your funny bone. With how the show is a brilliant sendup of what makes the DC Universe so wonderful, as well as how lovable the core group of characters are, it’s certainly one of the highlights of ongoing storytelling DC has to offer in both film and television right now, and certainly has Marvel beat when it comes to animated content at this time.
