Harry Potter star Rupert Grint has opened up on his relationship with series writer JK Rowling in light of her controversial views.
Back in 2020, JK Rowling shook the world when she posted a Tweet that many considered to be transphobic in nature. The writer would eventually double down on these views in an essay and hasn’t let up on these beliefs. This has since caused many of the people involved with the franchise, including Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, to speak out against the writer’s beliefs.
Since JK Rowling made her position clear, something of a shadow has been cast over the entire Harry Potter franchise. The writer was notably absent from the Harry Potter 20th Anniversary Reunion and Warner Bro Games has attempted to put some distance between the writer and the upcoming game, Hogwarts Legacy. All of this, however, doesn’t change the fact that some of these people, like Rupert Grint, have known JK Rowling for a long time and it’s not always easy to break off that kind of long-lasting relationship.
In a recent interview with The Times, Rupert Grint spoke briefly about his relationship with JK Rowling. Specifically, he likened her to an aunt that he doesn’t always agree with:
“I liken JK Rowling to an auntie. I don’t agree with everything my auntie says but she’s still my auntie. It’s a tricky one.”
The next installment in the franchise, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is being directed by David Yates from a screenplay written by JK Rowling and Steve Kloves. The film stars Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Callum Turner, William Nadylam, Poppy Corby-Tuech, Jessica Williams, Jude Law, and Mads Mikkelsen.
Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is currently scheduled for an April 15, 2022 release.
