The Penguin HBO Max series is set to bridge the gap between The Batman and its sequel.
During a recent interview with Variety, HBO Max’s head of originals Sarah Aubrey opened up about the upcoming The Batman spin-off series focusing on Colin Farrell’s Penguin. According to Aubrey, The Penguin is currently scheduled to premiere before the release of The Batman 2, serving as a prequel of sorts to the upcoming movie.
“Penguin will sit immediately after the end of The Batman and temporally before the events of the second movie,” Aubrey told the site. “The show will come out in between the two movies. Now beyond that, it’s fun for the audience to know that it will be a bridge between the two, but the actual release date, I’m not at liberty to say.”
“The goal of this is to show what Oz’s life is like and that’s very much in the streets of Gotham, trying to get up and over as only the Penguin can. As a hustler and a strategist with his own ambitions,” Aubrey continued. “It is a great example of having the time over eight episodes to tell a longer-arc character story with a lot of delicious twists and turns and new characters. “It’s very much going to be about Gotham at that street level, because he’s not flying around like Batman does. We are all embracing that as a very specific experience for audiences to have.”
The future of the new Batman series
The Penguin is set in the same universe as The Batman and sees Colin Farrell reprising his role as the villainous Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot. Cristin Milioti recently joined the show’s cast as Sofia Falcone, the daughter of Gotham city mob boss Carmine Falcone, played by John Turturro in The Batman.
Mare Of Easttown helmer Craig Zobel is directing the first two episodes of The Penguin, with Lauren LeFranc (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Chuck) overseeing the project as its writer and showrunner. Colin Farrell is an executive producer on the series alongside The Batman director Matt Reeves and producer Dylan Clark. Production is expected to begin early next year.
The Batman opened in theaters this past March, earning 770.8 million at the worldwide box office, a figure that makes it the firth highest-grossing movie of the year for now. Reeves is working on a sequel to the Warner Bros. project and currently writing its script alongside Mattson Tomlin.
