J.K. Rowling revealed why she didn’t participate in the HBO Max reunion special, Harry Potter: Return to Hogwarts.

Back in January, HBO Max dropped a special reunion special titled Harry Potter: Return to Hogwarts. The special, which featured the likes of Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson among many others celebrated 20 years since the original release of The Sorcerer’s Stone in theaters. However, the notable absence of J.K. Rowling left many wondering the circumstances.

J.K. Rowling’s side of the story.

Although archival footage of J.K. Rowling was used in the special, the Harry Potter author was notably absent from the HBO Max reunion beyond that. Some attribute this due to the author’s own controversial views and social media presence, but the author revealed to Graham Norton that she chose not to:

“I was asked to be on that and I decided I didn’t want to do it. I thought it was about the films more than the book, quite rightly, that was what the anniversary was about… No one said don’t [do it]… I was asked to do it and I decided not to.”

Here is the synopsis from the latest entry in the Harry Potter prequel series, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore:

Professor Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) knows the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Mads Mikkelsen) is moving to seize control of the wizarding world. Unable to stop him alone, he entrusts Magizoologist Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) to lead an intrepid team of wizards, witches and one brave Muggle baker on a dangerous mission, where they encounter old and new beasts and clash with Grindelwald’s growing legion of followers. But with the stakes so high, how long can Dumbledore remain on the sidelines?

Directed by David Yates from a screenplay written by J.K. Rowling and Steve Kloves, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore stars Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Callum Turner, William Nadylam, Poppy Corby-Tuech, Jessica Williams, Jude Law, and Mads Mikkelsen.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is available to own on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD, Digital HD, and is also streaming on HBO Max. Stay tuned for all the latest news on J.K.
