James Gunn Clarifies ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3’ Soundtrack Details

The Flaming Lips' "Do You Realize??" may give fans some hints.

James Gunn Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3

James Gunn clarified some details regarding the soundtrack of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

After a roller coaster of a handful of years in development, James Gunn is finally bringing his long-awaited Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to the big screen next summer. The film, which will conclude the story of this iteration of the team, will once again feature one of the most iconic elements of the previous two films: a soundtrack from Star-Lord’s playlist.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ended with Kraglin (Sean Gunn) handing Peter Quill/Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) a Zune, which contained significantly more songs than what his mix tapes and Sony Walkman offered. The songs from the Zune will serve as the soundtrack of Vol. 3, and James Gunn shared some details regarding what to expect in the narrative, tweeting the following in response to a fan:

James Gunn’s Awesome Mix Vol. 3 will drop.

Star-Lord’s Zune included some retro songs such as the 1970’s songs “Father and Son” from Cat Stevens and “The Rubberband Man” from The Spinners. And the exclusive teaser that screened at San Diego Comic-Con in July featured “Do You Realize??” from The Flaming Lips, which released in 2002. Given that Peter Quill’s mother did not select the songs for this Zune, it’s likely that James Gunn’s vision for the Vol. 3 soundtrack will be a change of pace from what fans expect.

The Guardians recently appeared in Thor: Love and Thunder. Here is the synopsis:

The film finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.

Directed by Taika Waititi and produced by Kevin Feige and Brad Winderbaum, the Thor solo film stars Chris Hemsworth, Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, Jaimie Alexander, Taika Waititi, Russell Crowe, Natalie Portman, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper.

Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder is now playing in theaters. Meanwhile, James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will hit theaters on May 5, 2023.
