‘She-Hulk’ Episode 2 References Mark Ruffalo Replacing Edward Norton

Mark Ruffalo has been playing Dr. Banner for 10 years now.

Avengers Endgame Hulk Edward Norton Mark Ruffalo

The second episode of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law features a humorous reference to Bruce Banner actor Mark Ruffalo replacing Edward Norton.

Mark Ruffalo has been playing Dr. Bruce Banner for 10 years now, and for many, his portrayal has become the definitive big screen version of the character, beating out the likes of Eric Bana and Edward Norton. Ruffalo replaced Norton, whom played the character in the second Marvel Cinematic Universe film, The Incredible Hulk, and was originally set to reprise his role in The Avengers. Now, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is the first MCU project to reference the MCU’s most famous recasting.

In the second episode of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, titled “Superhuman Law,” we get a fourth-wall breaking moment in which Mark Ruffalo‘s Bruce Banner reflects on Blonsky, which is also a wink and a nod to the fact that in his origin film, Edward Norton was the one facing off Abomination:

“Actually Blonsky wrote me a really nice letter a while back. A really heartfelt haiku. So I put everything behind us. That fight was so many years ago, I’m a completely different person now. Literally.”

In response to this quote from her cousin, She-Hulk/Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany) gives a look at the camera and laughs.

More Self-Aware Humor On The Way

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is the first MCU entry that features a character breaking the fourth wall, which for some Marvel Studios fans, leads many wondering how this will play into Deadpool 3, which will now take place in the MCU. With some self-aware humor involved with this joke regarding Mark Ruffalo and Edward Norton, it will be interesting to see how this transitions onto future installments. Perhaps Jennifer Walters and Wade Wilson will inevitably have a fourth wall-breaking session together.

Here is the synopsis for She-Hulk: Attorney at Law:

“She-Hulk: Attorney at Law follows Jennifer Walters as she navigates the complicated life of a single, 30-something attorney who also happens to be a green 6-foot-7-inch superpowered hulk.”

Marvel Studios’ She-Hulk: Attorney at Law stars Tatiana Maslany, Mark Ruffalo, Tim Roth, Benedict Wong, Ginger Gonzaga, Josh Segarra, Jameela Jamil, Jon Bass, and Renée Elise Goldsberry.
