‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3’: James Gunn Gives Update On Voice Work

The film recently wrapped production!

Groot Rocket Raccoon Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 James Gunn

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn gives an update on the voice work for certain characters in the film.

Marvel Studios had a massive presentation last Saturday at San Diego Comic-Con. During the presentation, Kevin Feige shared some exclusive footage from some of the upcoming entries of both Phases 4 and 5. One of the films showcased was Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the long-awaited trilogy-capper from writer/director James Gunn.

I had the privilege of being in Hall H to have an exclusive look at James Gunn‘s Vol. 3. The trailer, which was set to The Flaming Lips’ “Do You Realize??” is an emotional peek at what the beloved group of misfits are up to since the events of Avengers: Endgame and Thor: Love and Thunder. In particular, we got a glimpse a fully-formed Adult Groot (Vin Diesel) as well as a look at flashbacks featuring Baby Rocket (Bradley Cooper).

Although both Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper are known for their voice work as Groot and Rocket respectively, the two have never been on set for any of the Guardians of the Galaxy films. In the case for Rocket, James Gunn’s brother Sean Gunn, who also plays Kraglin, is the on-set Rocket. With Vol. 3 having wrapped production, Gunn was asked about the status of certain voice work on the film, to which he shared the following:

An emotional conclusion?

James Gunn has described Vol. 3 as the conclusion to the journey that he had envisioned for the characters ever since the first film hit theaters in 2014. After the footage screened at Hall H, Gunn and the cast all got pretty emotional. When audiences get their first look at Baby Rocket in particular, the tears will start flowing en masse.

Although Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper are part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, their already-busy schedules are part of why they only contribute with their voices (albeit, to wonderful effect). Diesel is also the star of Fast & Furious, one of the most popular film franchises in the world. Meanwhile, Cooper is one of the most-acclaimed actors of his generation and also is hard-at-work as a writer, director, and producer. He is currently working on his upcoming Netflix film, Maestro, his second directorial effort after his Academy Award-winning film, A Star is Born.

Along with Vol. 3 next year, James Gunn remains hard-at-work with the MCU thanks to the upcoming release of The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, which is set to hit Disney Plus later this year. Along with his MCU projects, Gunn is also developing more projects for the DC Extended Universe, including a second season of his The Suicide Squad spinoff Peacemaker as well as an untitled Amanda Waller series.

The Guardians of the Galaxy recently appeared in Thor: Love and Thunder. Here is the synopsis:

The film finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.

Directed by Taika Waititi and produced by Kevin Feige and Brad Winderbaum, the Thor solo film stars Chris Hemsworth, Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, Jaimie Alexander, Taika Waititi, Russell Crowe, Natalie Portman, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper.

Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder is now playing in theaters. Meanwhile, James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will hit theaters on May 5, 2023.
