Will fans ever get season 2 of Hawkeye? Jeremy Renner reveals why he turned down the chance to return to Marvel’s corner of Disney Plus television.
Marvel has had a rough go of it when it comes to their offerings on Disney Plus. While there have been some diamonds in the rough, like Hawkeye and Loki, many of their shows end up missing the mark. Not because they’re explicitly bad, but rather because they don’t do anything beyond the typical event television format, with most of them not even getting a season 2.
If there was any show that suffered most from not getting a season 2, it’s Hawkeye. Not only was it one of the best received Disney Plus shows that Marvel put out, but it finally put the focus on Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton, a mainstay of the MCU who had yet to have a solo project to his name. Yet despite how badly fans wanted for the character to return, there has been radio silence on a follow-up to the series.
Why Doesn’t Hawkeye Have A Season 2?
Yet it seems the reason for the silence may not be as peachy as fans might have expected. In a recent chat with High Performance, Jeremy Renner got candid about why Hawkeye wasn’t brought back for season 2. The actor revealed that Marvel only offered him half of his salary from his first Disney Plus outing to return. A number that he believes is tied to his snowplow accident back in 2023.
“They asked me to do Season 2, and they offered me half the money,” Renner explained. “I’m like, ‘Well, it’s going to take me twice the amount of work for half the amount of money, and eight months of my time, essentially, to do it for half the amount. I’m like, ‘I’m sorry? Why? Did you think I’m only half the Jeremy because I got ran over? Maybe that’s why you want to pay me half of what I made on the first season.’”
“This is not Marvel, mind you. This is like, just Disney, not even really Disney. It’s just the penny pinchers, the accountants. I told them to go fly a kite. I mean, just at the at the insult offer. So we didn’t see eye to eye on it.”
Given how long Hawkeye season 2 has been rumored to be in development, these discussions about compensation likely aren’t new. And it’s also likely not a coincidence that Jeremy Renner is being vocal about these concerns right as Marvel is gearing to film Avengers: Doomsday, a project which many expect to be a reunion of the original Avengers cast.
